A crack appeared in our wall in 2021. No big deal, houses get cracks in walls. In 2022 the crack stayed about the same (I wasn’t taking measurements) and in 2023 the crack got bigger to around 5mm wide. In addition, in 2023 some hairline cracks appeared on the brickwork outside, going through some of the cement, through a couple of bricks and settling on a corner.
We called Broker Direct PLC insurance to report the problem and see if they would look into or whether we would have to investigate it ourselves. They said they would send a surveyor round, which they did. The surveyor was chatty and I was happy to talk to him – although my terminology isn’t very good. He told me that it would need a structural engineer to determine the cause of the cracks.
The surveyor must have reported back to the insurance and they let us know that they were sending our claim to the Subsidence Department.
